INSPIRED BY SIR THOMAS DESMOND GIMLETTE.

A good drink can save many an evening. In the past, it even saved lives—thanks to British fleet physician Sir Thomas Desmond Gimlette. In October 1879, he joined the Royal Navy and promptly invented one of the world’s most famous cocktails: the Gimlet.

To be on the safe side, the doctor prescribed his drink—made of equal parts gin and lime juice cordial—twice a day. The recipe contained enough vitamin C to protect sailors on long sea voyages from scurvy. The alcohol, meanwhile, worked as a preventative against low spirits on board. The mixture was as simple as it was ingenious, which is why it still has a place in every good bar today. The key lies in the quality of the preserved and sweetened citrus juices. Back then, specially appointed officials—the Inspectors of Lime Juice—checked the supplies of incoming and outgoing ships at every customs port in the British Empire. Today, there is Desmond’s.

Like our namesake, we have been part of bar culture from the very beginning. Desmond’s is a tribute to our cocktail pioneer, an invitation to try something new, and an essential ingredient for adventures in a glass.
